FAQ

1. How much does an automotive locksmith service cost?

There is no simple answer here. Different make, model and year of car affects the pricing. Pricing is also based on whether or not the client wants a genuine original part. Luxury cars have high-security key and key fob system so their automotive locksmith services usually cost more. Previously having the locks rekeyed or changed will affect the price too. Our price quotes also differ to include mileage charge if we come to your location.

2. What makes some car and motorcycle keys so expensive to make?

Vehicle security is constantly evolving and becoming more technically sophisticated as the years progressed. Most late model vehicles are equipped with a type of anti-theft system called transponders and keys use an electronic fob. In order to program these types of keys / fobs, Nik Auto Key have to invest in the equipment, training, parts, key code subscriptions and machines.

3. Do I choose the dealership or a locksmith for a new car key?

While the dealership may be slightly cheaper on the cost of the key, the programming fees will remain the same and sometimes higher with the dealership. Most importantly, you may have to tow your car to the dealership, wait a few hours, and possibly rent a loaner car if you cannot wait. Nik Auto Key locksmith can conviniently come to your location within an hour and make you a car key replacement in little time.

4. Does my vehicle key has a chip in it?

Most vehicle brands, foreign and domestic, after the year 2000, will have a transponder chip key to start the vehicle. The immobilizer or transponder chip needs to be programmed into the vehicle's ECU in order to ignite the engine. This is an addition to cutting the key blade.

5. Will my old car key work if I find it?

It is highly recommended to have all existing keys erased from the vehicle's ECU for the safety reason that if someone other than you finds it, they cannot drive off with your vehicle. However, if you do ask the locksmith not to erase them, then your old key will work, unless the programming of the new key requires the removal of the old codes. Remember, your old key will still work mechanically.
